OK, nice texture you made, in this way tutorial is kool.
But what about the construction of the eye, the shape of this object? Many people cant draw it normally, because they dont know how its built up, how its changing by emotions etc.

anyway, keep up drawing!

38. onlypencil said in December 4th, 2007
thank you. Well these tutorials are if you already have your drawing and you want to give your drawings more realism. Well thank you commenting and hope you return.

dude you are a master!
very very talented
keep it up.

57. MaryAnn said in December 6th, 2007

Great eye! Thanks for the lesson. You’ve inspired me to keep drawing!

One question: Why do you use 3 light sources to be reflected in the eye?

Also, in the 2nd paragraph you say >”the pupil(the black area in the center), this area that increases in size when light hits it.”<
Doesn’t the pupil contract when light hits it? Light makes the opening close down, and darkness makes it open wider to let in more light. That’s what I think anyway. I’m just being picky…but also want to make sure your credibility/talent is seen.
Good work! Thanks! MaryAnn

58. onlypencil said in December 6th, 2007
Thanks for the comment im glad you caught that and yes the pupil contracts when light hits it. As for the light source, Light can come from many sources, it can come from either a single light bulb to a the horizon when your outside. That light source can bed divided by objects that can also be reflected, eg. trees a person or persons.

267. arry2007uk said in February 7th, 2008

Great tutorial - one question though, I don’t have a color blender as of yet (have all other equipment though) is there any alternative I could use to give me a similar effect?

268. onlypencil said in February 7th, 2008
“is there any alternative I could use to give me a similar effect?”

If you don’t have a color blender you can use a shading stump. If you don’t have a shading stump you can use some rolled up piece of tissue paper, but its hard to use because its hard to get a fine point.

271. arry2007uk said in February 8th, 2008

Thank you for the advice, I’m buying myself a “Paper Stump Blender” from my local art shop tomorrow - I think this is the right thing.

You see I’m a self taught cartoonist and have been for the best part of a decade but now I’m looking to teach myself a more realistic aproach to drawing. In this day and age the best resource for such is usually websites with dedicated individuals such as yourself.

Another quick question, is it a must to use a mechanical 2b rather than a standard 2b pencil as I’m not all too fond of those flimsy technical pencils.

274. onlypencil said in February 8th, 2008
yeah the paper stump blender will work. Well thank you and im glad these tutorials are helpful. You can use a standard 2b pencil. I prefer mechanical because i don’t have to be sharpening to get a fine point. Drawing is about experimenting and seeing what works for you. Well take care.
275. annonymus said in February 8th, 2008

this has been really helpful for me, especially as a young artist, (15) but i was wondereing if you could do this sort of thing with out the cool tools or if they have any impact on the outcome of the realistic effect. thank you so much.

277. onlypencil said in February 9th, 2008
Hello, thank you and im glad they have been helpful. The only tool that i think most pencil artist are not familiar with is the color blender. If you dont have a color blender you can use a shading stump. The reason i use the color blender is because it gives me much more control on the shading. Its not so good for large areas, but its great for shading around detailed areas. Go to your local art shop and ask for a color blender, these are mostly used for painting but they are great for pencil. The kneaded eraser is great because it removes graphite without much effort so its great for getting different effects. In this example, the kneaded eraser works great for adding highlights. You can use a normal eraser by cutting an eraser on an angle making a fine edge. The problem with this is that you have to keep cutting the eraser to get the fine edge.

thank you, so much. im glad that you have been able to help me because there arent alot of people out where i amm that know alot about drawing.thanks again,

292. jay said in February 16th, 2008

thank you so much!…i’ve always had a problem with getting that realistic effect with the iris, but now i know how! thanks

also when i draw, i tend to use lot’s of contrast as opposed to a full tonal range, but going through you tutorial has made me realise that i should be using more range. thanks! =D
