This was a fun project. This is a life size drawing of my brothers dog, Bowser. He’s a brindle bullmastiff and as you can see, he’s a big boy. It had been a while since i had drawn a dog, so this one was a really enjoyable, especially this size.
I primarily used pencil but used some charcoal for the dark parts like on the lips and around the eyes. The charcoal made the darks look deeper which added so much more contrast.
The dog measures 32″ inches in height and i again, i went with a white background. I had to make sure that the dog looked solid because of the white background. I didn’t want the dog to blend in with it, so i had to get the right values. The lightest parts on the dog are the reflections on the eyes, lips and the white patch on his chest. Its really hard to appreciate the amount of detail that it has from this picture. I may just do a series with Bowser being my main subject, he’s got really interesting facial features that i really liked working on
